apparently there are issues specific to the machine, including a faulty 
but reflashable bios and the need to build a trick kernel and trick 
xfree. this is all do-able -- i've done it for different reasons -- but 
not an abundance of fun.

according to the page, the problems you are encountering disappear with 
later distributions of, at least, redhat.

but apparently it otherwise requires extensive recompilation.
