Richard Nixon, as Vice President under Eisenhower, signed the
authorization that sent the first military advisors to Vietnam in 1956
(MAAG). In 1958 the U.S. suffered its first recognzed military deaths
in action in Vietnam, although "civilian" advisors had been killed and
wounded previously. Kennedy was elected in 1960. TID most likely, but
the era was something of a crucible for me. 'Nuff said.
