pilot-xfer instructions for merging

Here is all I can find about this topic in man pilot-xfer:

- m,   merge <file> [...] Adds the records in each
specified file into the corresponding Palm database.

This leaves off details. I assume you have to make a
pdb file with the appropriate name. How is such a file
constructed? It seems straight forward to construct a
longtxt file and convert it to pdb with pilot-datebook,
but is this acceptable? What about UID's?
