Ok,
I have agpgart and the DRI i830m modules built into the kernel now. This
is what I get from dmesg:
Linux agpgart interface v0.100 (c) Dave Jones
agpgart: Unsupported Intel chipset (device id: 3575)
agpgart: Detected an Intel 830M Chipset.
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 940M
agpgart: Detected 892K stolen memory.
agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xe8000000
Still only 892K seen with 8M set in bios. What next?
