Gentoo kernels are not vanilla kernels, and tend to have a very bad
reputation. I've not had a single problem with any 2.4.x kernel since
before 2.4.18. All of my production servers are still using 2.4.2x.

Quite the contrary. Most people running production servers with XFS are
still running 2.4.x, including me.
