I'm out of my depth here, since I don't use KDE often. Here are some
additional thoughts. Maybe something will trigger a thought:
1) What happens if you create another user and try to start KDE. If that
works, then obviously you still need to search and destroy some file.
2) Try using strace to trace the actions. You don't need to have a
complete understanding of trace, but maybe you will find a reference to
a problem file which you can rm.
3) Try searching through the Gentoo forums (www.gentoo.org -> forums)
for kde and ????. There are a lot of vocal kde users at gentoo. This
will be tedious, because there is a lot of traffic.
4) Ditto for the archives of the gentoo-user list (google for that;
gentoo maintains no official archive). Also quite tedious.
