Look for /tmp files like ICE... dcop... etc.  Look for ~/.kde.. files
that are suspicious.

If nothing works, copy your .kdexxx directory to another name and then
try to start kde. If that works, then you can try to salvage thinks from
the old directory (good luck finding them).

<rant>
Who needs Windows to screw things up when KDE or GNOME can do it just
as well.  I hate these behemoths. Anyone who releases a product that
can't recover from a simple failure like this should go before the
firing squad.
