i want to kill suse!

morning.

not long ago suse sent out a security bulletin saying that there were 
vulnerabilities in xfree so please download the patched version. 
because of server congestion i didn't download it at once, but last 
night i was able to get and install it. and it broke my fonts. i have 
no idea what all it did, but perfectly nice, antialiased fonts have 
been replaced with scrunched-up, screwed-up ones. i figured that 
running ttmkfdir would fix it -- but it's gone!

as is always the case in such situations, i'm cranky enough that i'm 
probably missing the obvious. the correct fonts are set in the 
appropriate places and even display properly in the configuration 
dialogues. but they do not display in the applications.

anybody have a guess as to what i'm missing?
