Foomatic-hpiii driver

I am experiencing trouble with my Laser Jet III printer. It prints fine
in the following setup, with a few exceptions.
Printing from Linux box, networked with a share from a win98se box to
which the laser jet iiip is attached.
All print jobs from linux to this printer come out with a page listing
the following message:
@PJL SET PAGEPROTECT=AUTO
@PJL SET RESOLUTION=300
@PJL SET DENSITY=5
@PJL SET RET=OFF
@PJL SET ECONOMODE=ON
@PJL SET DUPLEX=OFF
@PJL ENTER LANGUAGE=PCL
After this page, with just this information on it, then the print jobs
come out. However, if the page is graphical (not even very dense, just
with any graphics) then it often renders a mem overflow error, printing
3/4 of the page on one sheet, then the rest on a second sheet, after
hitting the Continue button on the printer. This often occurs when
printing a .PDF file. However, if I open the same file on my windows
box, it prints out just fine, with NO PROBLEMS.
Why would this happen? I have searched high and low to find a solution
and explanation and can find none. Please help me resolve this. I would
remove and reinstall the foomatic drivers, or CUPS drivers, or whatever
other drivers, to enable both this laser jet iiip and also my deskjet
550c printers if I knew it would make them work correctly.
