StarOffice: Slide sorter slow

I loaded up knoppix on the 2.4 gig P4 at work. Things went
much better. OO 1.1.1 or somesuch was on it. It worked
fast enuf to be useful, but still too slow to suggest to
anyone that they should switch from powerpoint to OO for
their presentations. The slowness comes in due to the
size of each slide, which runs (likely unnecessarily)
up to 3 megs each. Powerpoint handles these things very
quickly. OO is much slower to redraw each thumbnail. It
acts like it has to generate the thumbnails each time it
redraws them. With the 1 gig duron it was impossible. With
the 2.4 P4 it was doable but you wouldn't want to use it
very long.

Maybe this has something to do with OO being designed for
multiuser systems, and you can't let one program consume
all the resources on the computer.

The nice surprise was that OO and SO both imported and
ran the ppt's properly, including hyperlinks..
