honestly, I never dared to do so, always did this as modules.

Please don't mix up kernel support for good old OSS and alsa's OSS 
emulation. The two don't go together.
You DO need ALSA'S OSS emulation if you want to run any sound 
application with alsa that is not designed to support it, eg,. xmms, 
ksdc ... almost anything.
