Gentoo install and 'world' updating

I'm in the midst of a gentoo install (my first time) and I'm trying
to learn the ins and outs of 'emerge' among other things.
For one thing, I've had to emerge several things not listed in
the installation guide, and while that has worked, I'm not sure
the 'merge' part of it has worked. Shouldn't those things now
be listed in /var/cache/edb/world? I see about half of them,
but not all. Plus, is there a quick way to get dependencies
updated later, or should I worry about packages not listed in
'world'?
I'm currently at a point where when I try to boot to gentoo,
most things go okay (lots of green on the screen), but it cannot
start devfsd (I just emerged it, haven't had a chance to try it),
but it never proceeds to login -- it just hangs there with the
bootup stuff on the screen and the only thing that works is
the 3-finger salute. Is devfsd likely to solve that (perhaps
by enabling ptys)?
