Trying to get gnus working

I tried that and ended up with this ~/.gnus file which still doesn't 
work. Now it doesn't attempt to look at any server.  The server list is 
empty except for the bogus ones gnus supplies.

(setq nntp-record-commands t)
(setq user-mail-address "brettholcomb at charter.net")
(setq user-full-name "Brett I. Holcomb")

(setq gnus-select-method '(nnpt "news.linux-sxs.org"))
