Well, I never could get mutt to properly display foreign
characters. I really didn't try that hard.

Vim creates and displays such characters fine, but,
although I use vim as my default editor without trouble,
making vim your default pager in mutt has drawbacks.

A satisfactory  solution is as follows:

In /etc/mailcap, define:
text/plain;       vim %s

Then, when reading your mail with foreign characters,
view the attachments (hit "v"), but then use "m" instead of
just hitting the return key once you are on the attachment
page. This make mutt use the mailcap entry and not the
mutt default pager.

Just gotta love vim.
