If only I could tell ... The documentation included with my version of
cups (1.1.17) clearly says:

'CUPS also includes a customized version of GNU Ghostscript (currently
based off GNU Ghostscript 5.50) and an image file RIP that are used to
support non-PostScript printers. Sample drivers for HP and EPSON
printers are included that use these filters.'

On the other hand, looking into some of the scripts coming with cups
(eg. /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster) I find that ghostscript is invoked
via a 'gs' command, and that points to the ghostscript version supplied
by the system - in my case:

[kp at kp kp]$ gs
GNU Ghostscript 7.07 (2003-05-17)

Looking at
http://www.cups.org/ghostscript.php
also suggests that cups is now relying on the ghostscript version
installed by the respective distro.

Perhaps you could really send me your PS file generated by Acrobat's
print-to-file option and I'll try if a can print it by a simple
	lpr roger.ps
That should work!
