Good. RH9 shouldn't be the problem then. (But in all headers I've looked 
at it appears file pointers are defined as 32 bit.)

Your intuition is right. The problem was in the toy backup app in Win98, 
not in samba. It took the 8.8GB file fine once I got that out of the 
loop. I'll just have to figure out a simple way to do the full backup 
via a "pull" from Linux instead of a "push" from Winders.
