curious about kernel message

I notice there's been no traffic on the list for a while so here's a
question.

Just one of those little "I wonder why" questions.

I've noticed on every kernel and every box I've used since the dawn of
time messages like the following:

Mar 2 05:21:09 home kernel: SIS5513: IDE controller at PCI slot
0000:00:02.5
Mar 2 05:21:09 home kernel: SIS5513: chipset revision 0
Mar 2 05:21:09 home kernel: SIS5513: not 100%% native mode: will probe
irqs later
Mar 2 05:21:09 home kernel: SIS5513: SiS 962/963 MuTIOL IDE
UDMA133 controller

Since no IDE controller that I have ever seen is "100%% native mode,"
what is a 100% native mode IDE controller, or was there every such a
beast?
