Keith I enabled remote access the other day so a user could connect from home over the internet using a dialup to a ADSL connected XP Home box and it required installing remote control software.

If you want to connect the remote desktop protocol RDP. You will need to have Windows XP professional installed. Then it is a simple matter of opening the "System Control Panel" and then enabling remote connections and selecting who can connect. This is your best option if you have XP Pro as the rdesktop protocol rocks and you can connect to it from Linux.

Windows XP Home only allows the user to request assistance and not for a remote user/administrator to connect with an unsolicited RDP client. If you have Windows XP Home then you may have to install a remote control software... Seeing as symantecs PCAnywhere is around 260.00AUD I opted for www.radmin.com which provides a 128 bit encrypted tunnel for the remote desktop session. It retails for around 35USD.

Of course installing VNC is the cheapest option however this is unencrypted and you may suffer from poor screen redraw if you are on a dialup connection.

As with all remote control software you need to make sure that your firewalls aren't blocking.

RDP runs on 3389
RADMIN runs on 4899
VNC runs on 5900 for display 0 (windows only has display 0)
PCAnyWhere I'm unsure of what port it uses and it breaks the ability to use RDP.

Anywho I hope this helps.

I don't know how to explain it. I am both intelligent AND superficial.
