Monster IDE Drives

quoth Kurt Wall:

| Good grief. I don't need a $1,200 disk drive, although I could
| probably use the disk space.

i still have, in a box someplace, the 340-meg micropolis i bought on
special sale in 1989 for $650 because, i decided, storage would never
be this cheap again. (also the 20-meg hard card i bought for just about
that much in 1988, and the 5-meg full height original ibm in an
original pc that cost God-knows-how-much.)

| I suppose "monster" depends on one's frame of reference. To wit:
| I drive Ford Focus, so my neighbor's Crown Victoria looks like
| whale, but, next to the Hummer H2, my neighbor's Crown Victoria looks
| like a minnow.

in some research this week i happened upon the "nexus," a proposal nasa
was considering in the 1960s as a followup to the saturn V. (this after
the eight-engine "nova" had been ruled out.) the "nexus" would have
stood nearly 600 feet high -- too big to build in the v.a.b. -- and
would at its base have been 262 feet in diameter. and one imagines the
downblast from it would have moved the east coast of florida to the
outskirts of orlando. something like an atlas or a titan would have
looked like a bottle rocket next to it.
