The various Debian distros that have gone under usually left instructions for
migrating back to "vanilla" Debian, with various levels of success. Since
I've heard that Libranet is 100% compatible with Debian, I'm sure their path
will be less painful than that of Xandros, should the need arise.

Since I can't do much of what I want in Windows, "as convenient as windows" is
setting the bar too low for my needs. ;-)

As for *BSD's, I love my FreeBSD box. It serves my database needs well, the
system and ports are easy to install/update ('portupgrade -arR' upgrades all
ports.), and learning ipfw was fairly painless. That said, Linux has better
java and multimedia support; and many Symantec apps now support the ext3
filesystem.

My employer's IS department still wants me to move my database server from
FreeBSD to Linux. I've agreed to do so whenever IS officially supports
Linux. I'm going to request an AMD64 server in next year's budget. (Is
postgresql ready to make full use of 64bit OS's?) I'm hoping that
associating the move to Linux (SUSE?) with a new server will gain some
support from the CIO.

Best regards,
