If you want a real "buy", I think lindows now is free. This
is never a good sign, but lindows is a debian distro,
so the usual debian things work. Even if lindows were
to go belly up, you would still have a workable debian
system. They want to you subscribe to the warehouse,
which offers free software for free and a discount on some
proprietary software. The main advantage of the warehouse
is its search engine.

It is a full fledged version of linux, just specially
engineered to make is as convenient as windows, that is,
there is no security out of the box save for their default
firewall. You won't find a more convenient desktop version
than this.

So for free it can't be beat, IMHO. They just came out
with a special laptop edition as well as an updated version
for desktops.

I wouldn't use if for a firewall, but, there are those
who say that BSD, not linux, is the proper choice for a
firewall anyway, so, to each his own.
