Thanks dep, Ted, Michael, Leon, and Jack for the input. Thanks to
the others who chimed in with Ol' Timer Bedtime Stories.

To summarize the responses:

? Drives up to 137GB should work well
? You get the best performance on a bus that supports the ATA 100
  or ATA 133 speeds - if the support isn't there natively, get an
  an ATA 100/133 adapter card and a good quality 80-conductor cable
  (I'm partial to the round ones and have two on the way)
? Use smartmontools to access the drive's SMARTs
