Connecting DVD sound

I can't believe that it simply connects the lines in parallel.  There is a 
molded case that could hold LOTS of electronic whiz bangs but I don't know.

There is another part:
P/N 120 0270  $7.95
That I actually use.  Works great.  Not sure what the difference is between parts.
