I had a similar problem with a USB Zire 71 on a Toshiba Satellite. My
problem was that my user was not a member of the proper group (UUCP
in your case). That was RH 9.
Also, I noticed that your setserial returned an unrecognized UART.
Perhaps it would be worth your time to investigate what UART you have
and manually set the value via setserial. It's been awhile since I
messed with serial ports much, but if I remember correctly I set up
my serial port definitions in rc.local on a Caldera system. Lastly,
have you checked that both devices are using the same serial port
speeds and lowered them to see if that has any effect? Again, this
might be affected by what the linux does/doesn't see in the UART.
