Simple tty/getty problem

Hi Guys,

I am working on a backup application, a Samba box to pull files off of
several Winblows boxen as a backup/archival setup.  I was experimenting
with tailing a data log file on one of the Winboxen and it ended up being
binary, it corrupted the tty I was on at the time.  The characters look
like wingdoings for lack of a better term.  Is there a way I can restart
the tty/getty without rebooting?  So far kill -HUP hasn't worked and it
must be something simple that I am missing.
