I rather doubt it.  The entire point of loadlin is to use it to boot from
DOS.

No, that cannot be what is happening.

What kind of partitioning scheme are you using?  What kind of drives are
they?  SCSI, IDE, SATA?  What kind of bootloader does Mandrake use (LILO
or grub)?
