checkinstall won't work w/ my fedora core 1

Installing from source wouldn't work, I could compile it, install it with
'make install,' but it would fail at the 'checkinstall' part. That's when I
decided to try the binary from http://dag.wieers.com/packages/checkinstall/
I also installed from DAG's .src.rpm with similar problems.
Perhaps I'll try the 1.6 beta...
