So, is the USB GPS a serial-over-usb device after all?

We use high-end trimble GPS systems and would love to eliminate the serial
stuff. We use them in asynchronous mode (we get a signal when data arrives).
I have not had a chance to see if the USB interface allows this. I would
imagine it should. That is why I have a serial->USB cable sitting around.
But it is low down on the list of things to check.
