Seg faults - More data

As reported to some, AI get Seg faults in Linux, and page faults in Winders.  
I decided to investigate the processor.

After talking to AMD, I found that the Atholon XP TBred 1800+ reports as 
1150, not 1530.  It may not be seeing the secondary cache of 256.  It 
doesn't see it when running the memtest.

I checked the bios, and it is Award ver. 1.0 (That number always concerns 
me).  I went to the MSI (motherboard) site, but there are only bios 
upgrades for AMI bios.

Questions follow:

1.  The two (AMI and Award) bios flash upgrades don't mix, do they?

2.  In the bios setup screen, I cna't find anything for BIOS flash 
protection, but apparently this board has it.  Any ideas on disabling it?

I have an email into MSI, but goodness knows how long that will take.  Any 
ideas?
