Configuring DWL-520 wireless network card

Well, I now have a 2.4.23 kernel supposedly with drivers
for the Prism 2.5 cards.  I am not sure which driver is
the one to use, since on the internet you can find all
sorts of recommendations.

The card wasn't automatically detected or configured at
boot.

So, I modprobe'd everything I could find which sounded
interesting, and only this module loaded and detected
the card.

modprobe prism2_pci

iwconfig gives this:

Warning: Driver for device wlan0 has been compiled with version 16
of Wireless Extension, while this program is using version 15.
Some things may be broken...

wlan0     IEEE 802.11-b  ESSID:""
          Mode:Auto  Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
          Encryption key:off


All the other drivers either wouldn't load, or loaded
without complaint, but iwconfig didn't show anything.

hostap.o

So far so good.

However, attempts to use iwconfig result in error messages, like:
iwconfig wlan0 essid linksys
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :
    SET failed on device wlan0 ; Function not implemented.
iwconfig wlan0 key 1234-1234-12
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
    SET failed on device wlan0 ; Function not implemented.
