Using knoppix I get permission denied for device

I didn't think /dev/hd? could be mounted.  I thought you needed a partition 
with some sort of format in order to see it as a mountable partition.  I know 
when you run lilo or grub you can put the loader in the mbr of the drive 
(/dev/hd?), but I don't think you can mount it directly.
