Using knoppix I get permission denied for device

As far as I can tell, yes. It is on /dev/hda1, and that I mount and
change to read/write.

But it is not /dev/hda1 that is the problem. The problem is
/dev/hda. My lilo.conf puts the MBR there: boot=/dev/hda.

So, it looks like I don't know how to make /dev/hda
accessible in Knoppix, even though I have created the dev
entry for it.
