mandrake 9.2 and 10 problem

I have been using for a while mandrake 9.1 and recently bought locally a copy
of 9.2 on DVD. It installs but will not complete booting on my machine. It is
machine specific the problem as it installs on an older MB on a friends machine
and boots. Yep I have downloaded the iso's and they have exactly the same
problem.

What happens is that it baulks at bringing up the inbuilt ieee1394, disable
that and it stops
at my inbuilt 3com card, kill that and it stops at the loopback. 9.1 boots
fine obviously.

I downloaded the pre beta test version of 10 off mandrake site. Installs
and boots fine, even
though its is a pre pre test cooker install. It lacks Kmail, tells me the
executable is not there.
It has kde3.1.94 but I cannot see a kdepim-kmail on the install disk, I
would like to get mail
working; any advice as there are no mandrake rpms onsite. It is also a long
time since I did
a compile of kde and forget exactly what to do now. I also do not have
sound as yet although I do
get a distorted signal as if it is installed but stuffed up.

I am not too worried as it works fine for me except for kmail.
