2.6.1 Config

I'm taking a crack at 2.6.1 but I'm in the middle of the usual console 
problems.

At boot time, it keeps throwing up some sort of graphic screen in a wrong mode 
(which makes it unreadable) and I can't tell what the boot is doing.  (and it 
never completes)

I've killed all the logo stuff in the configuration, and I've been trying to 
kill any thought of graphics during the boot.  I've set  vga=ask at boot time 
and have tried a simple  80x25  request for that...  but the damn graphic 
screen keeps coming up.

Anyone have an idea where I config'd wrong?  Obviously something in the 
console defs.
