My experience with wireless is with FreeBSD and NetBSD, not Linux; so this may
not apply:
The most common problem I see people facing in getting WEP to work is its
combined use with DHCP. Whatever method is used to configure and activate
the wireless network must configure the card with the WEP key prior to
activating dhclient.
If you're using DHCP, try using static addresses. (While you're at it,
changing the network address from the default might not be a bad idea.)
