Woohoo!

It all works (just about) now.

I still don't have a driver for the Ethernet

It took booting with one of my old Gentoo CDs (with 2.4.19-gentoo-r7) and 
recompiling from there- without PNPBios of all things- to make it work.

But it's very fast :)

Thanks all.  I might just get that SCSI cable to celebrate...
