Debian stable is a bit dated for a desktop but ideal for a server. Very
stable and easily updated for security fixes. Slackware might be worth a
look. It's also very stable, with up-to-date packages available,
installs very lean, and has fairly new software for updates (swaret and
slapt-get, similar to debian's apt-get)
