Testing a new gentoo system (no better than the old; just beta testing
to help out the developers). Clock was out of whack. It's probably been
out of whack for some time, but I never noticed it, since I've been
running SUSE 9.0 on this machine.

I just emerged ntp and have permanently corrected the time.
