ImageMagick, convert, and you run it batch.
convert infile -transparent white outfile
or something like that.
Also, google on giftrans and transgif.
BTW - *I* like gimp. I read "Groking the Gimp" years ago and I have
a pretty good understanding of it now. I use it routinely.
