When my son went back to Sydney I gave him a copy of Suse 8.2 I had lying
around, that I did not want. To cut a long story short, he installed it when
he got home, on boot it saw the sata drive which he had enabled again also
the modem worked as it should too.

I have mentioned this anomily previously, in that, all the distributions and
their individual versions vary on the 'mb,cpu, memory' combinations that
they will boot on. By this I have seen many install without a problem but not
boot or do so and other parts do not work as they should.

Case in point, my machine combination: Does will not boot when I install
Mandrake 9.2; 9.1 is fine. It karks it on bringing up iee1394 port, if I
disable that it stops on my inbuild 3com card after that loopback.
Yet on a friends machine its the greatest since boiled pigs feet.

That seems to be the greatest failing of linux, the distributions fragment
and a newcomer can find it difficult to decide what to use; t he can then
still have problems. Caldera 2.4 was the exception, however I still remember,
fanct me doing that, some problems with some users.

BTW, happy and prosperous New Year to all.
