I've got no clue how or why opera suddenly started working after that
hideous mess, but it seems fairly clear that your filesystem is really
trashed.  I'm guessing that the power supply wasn't too healthy for some
period of time before it finally died, and that effected the data getting
written to/from the disks.   Which filesystem are you using?
