well.
in keeping with the excellent suggestions from everybody, some but
not all of which i had thought of, i determined that the ups was
working. the power supply issue was a little more problematic, for a
couple of reasons. first, there was a single led on the motherboard
which remained on; second, i discovered that the leds on one of the
case fans came on, for just an instant, when the not-really-a-switch
switch was pressed.
i didn't get too heavily into further diagnostics, for an important
reason: i remembered that i'd gotten case, power supply, motherboard,
and memory from the same place last april, and i still had the
receipt. it's a wonderful little computer store, run by extremely
knowledgeable and friendly korean people, located in a nearby strip
mall. i've done business with them for five years almost. so this
morning i took the whole case, drives, etc., in and described the
symptoms, which they instantly narrowed down to the switch in the
case, the power supply, the motherboard, the feedback circuit in the
chip fan, or something else. which is just fine, because, they said,
whatever it is it gets fixed for free and i should come back at 2
p.m. today to reclaim my computer.
at which time, presumably, i'll find out what the problem was.
i had completely forgotten that there are things such as guarantees!
