Thanks. One of the best articles I've read recently. The Inquirer usually
does a bang up job.

My general impression is that within the next decade (at the latest),
Microsoft will become primarily a US-only phenomenon. Here at home,
Microsoft lobbyists can successfully tinker with the government purse
strings, but abroad their fud tactics will work less and less well. The fact
that open software gets better and better while Microsoft software gets more
and more exposed prone to virii doesn't help.

With products like SUSE 9.0, Libranet, and Mandrake that seamlessly install on
most currently available systems without the need of a guru standing in the
wings, cheap if not free Linux is the wave of the future. Lindows also has a
good running start in the game.

I've never been in a position to afford or to need the premier server products
from Red Hat, SUSE, et al, but if they have improved as much as the desktop
variants, Microsoft has no chance in the world to come.

As the article implies, Microsoft is at a turning point - start over with
products that have a robust system design and can be marketed cheaply or be
relegated to the scrap heap. It couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people,
well, the folks at SCO are almost as nice <g>
