This sounds like a zeroconf problem. I can't remember if you need it turned
on or need it turned off if this problem occurs.

AFAIK, sata is not fully supported in the 2.4.x kernels. I don't know about
the 2.6 kernels.

Setup a source for plf and install avifile-* and xine and mplayer, with those
and supporting packages, they should be able to play most all formats. The
plf source also has all packages for dvds.
