If you can't get this to go in Linux then OSX on an Apple Machine might be
the way to go.  Image capture in OSX 10.3 might be able to help.  Image
Capture allows you to control some cameras from a web interface.  An Apple
script could allow timed shots to take place.

This should be possible to setup on Linux but its beyond my abilities.  It
appears that some cameras can be instructed to snap pictures while connected
to the USB port, a cron job or shell script could be written instructing the
camera to take pictures.
