Matt,

Collins gave a pretty good description of the process.  However, I note that
he uses a P4 2.4GH CPU, which most of us don't have.  So we are a good deal
slower.  However, Gentoo lets you set up other CPU's to share the compile
load.  If you have a home network, check out the instructions on that to
allow other machines to share the load.

The biggest problems I've had with Gentoo (as with all Linux) is when I
*think* I know something and don't follow the instructions carefully enough.

Just for a data point, I'm running a Gentoo server and a SUSE 9.0 desktop at
home.
