Simple (though time-consuming):
Look for a stage1 tarball and d/l it.
Choose a large (suggest 5+Mb) empty partition, format as desired and
mount.
cd into that partition.
untar the tarball
follow the instructions on the Gentoo site, but basically:
chroot into the Gentoo partition (chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash)
run env-update and source /etc/profile
emerge sync
cd /usr/portage
run scripts/bootstrap (or something like that)
come back tomorrow and continue w/ installation per the gentoo site.

I do this from a VT so I can log out X and let my kids play while the
compile goes on.
