Oh, sorry missed that.  I read somewhere recently that M$ had some new
plan for licencing the FAT filesystem and that this was significant for
digital camera manufacturers as they all(?) use FAT.  So perhaps safe to
assume your flash card does too.

NTFS, which could be what the NT4 server is using, supports hard links. 
Maybe the server had hard links and the flash card couldn't handle that.
