Determine OS and web server software

One way is to go to www.netcraft.com (which I find now is redirecting to
http://news.netcraft.com) and enter the site in question's URL in their
"what's that site runnin?" box.

For example it tells me www.hammershome.com is running Apache/1.3.27 on
Linux.  Also gives IP address and Netblock Owner.
