I'm not sure about this, but it's an easy matter to creat a grub boot floppy &
then install grub to your boot sector, after you have replaced your old hard
drive with your new one:

Go ahead and swap your drives, then boot off of the grub boot floppy. Issue a
couple of commands and you will be ready to reboot off of your new hard drive.
Won't take more than five minutes -- assuming you already have grub installed to
your new hard drive.
